Morning Routines: Hype or Incredible Tools of Life Transformation?

I recently wrote a blog post about joining Russell Brunson's 30Days.com program, which gives me access to interviews with 30 millionaires about how they would start from scratch if they lost everything and had to re-build their businesses.

One of my absolute favorite parts of these interviews is the entrepreneurs who detail exactly how they would set up their morning routines and how they would carry out these morning routines every day of their 30-day plan.

These exceptionally successful people view morning routines as crucial components of success.

While the majority of the world views the equation to success as being work, hustle, and more work, these experts who have already achieved massive success view the equation as personal development + mindset + intentional action.

What Does A Good Morning Routine Include?

Based on the morning routines outlined in the 30Days plans, along with the routine from Hal Elrod's Miracle Morning, here are the 8 most common elements of the morning routines of high achievers:

1. Meditation and Prayer

Almost universally, every successful person you read about will talk about the importance of taking time to quiet your mind every day. Whether you meditate, pray, or simply sit still for a few minutes, you'll benefit from clearing your mind of chaotic thoughts.

This is a great time to think about the things that you're grateful for in your life and to focus on releasing stress with each breath that you exhale.

If you're new to meditating, check out Headspace's app. It has 10-minute guided meditations to help you slow down and focus and increase mindfulness.

2. Affirmations

While affirmations are made out to be a joke in mainstream culture, they are used by the highest achievers in our society to accomplish extraordinary goals.

As Napoleon Hill says in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich, "What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

Affirmations allow you to remind yourself who you are, what you believe, and where you're going in life. Your thoughts have power, and when you repeat your mantras, you're cementing your beliefs and desires in your subconscious so that your thoughts will be constructive for you. This lays the foundation for you to manifest your goals and dreams!

If you need some ideas for affirmations, a quick Pinterest search will give you plenty of possibilities. And if you're hesitant about speaking them out loud, then start with writing them over and over on a piece of paper, just like writing lines on a chalkboard.

3. Visualization

Moving further on down the list of crazy... :) Just kidding!

Visualization is the act of imagining what it's going to be like when you've achieved your dream... really put yourself in a moment where you'll know you've achieved your goal. Maybe it's a vacation you'll go on, maybe it's a purchase you'll make, maybe it's the state of mind you'll be in.

Pick one of those moments and spend 5-10 minutes just living in that moment. How will it feel? Who will be there with you? What will you say or do? What will you see, hear, taste, smell?

Soak up the details and enjoy the feeling of having already accomplished your goals!

Remember, there's enormous power in your subconscious thoughts, especially when coupled with emotion. So visualization is important because it convinces your brain that you've already succeeded and reinforces the constructive thoughts in your subconscious.

4. Exercise

You know all the benefits of exercise - improved health, increased energy, less stress, and all that jazz. So get your body moving in the morning!

Every successful person's schedule that I've ever seen always includes time for exercise, so find something that you enjoy doing and get moving for 30-60 minutes. Or Hal Elrod's Miracle Morning just calls for 10 minutes of exercise!

Go for an early morning walk, break out some yoga poses, load up a workout video on Beachbody On Demand, bike around your neighborhood, hit the gym, whatever works for you.

If you want super-entrepreneur points, listen to a self-development or business-related audiobook while you work out! ;)

5. Reading

Speaking of audiobooks, reading is another non-negotiable among the routines of the ├╝ber-successful. Millionaires typically spend at least 10-60 minutes day reading a non-fiction book... self-development, personal growth, financial, business... some type of book that will help you grow as an individual and/or as an entrepreneur.

I prefer to read books on my Kindle, while my husband loves audiobooks on Audible and is also an avid highlighter in hardcopy books. Find what works for you and dive into a good book every day.

If you haven't read Think and Grow Rich or The 4-Hour Workweek yet, those are classics and make perfect books to start building your daily reading habit!

Another tactic to try is to have a stack of books and read 2 minutes in each book, pulling out one quick "nugget" that you can put into action that day. So if you don't have the patience for one chapter of a book, or if you're looking to shake up your existing routine, try this "ultra reading" technique for something new.

6. Journaling

I have to confess, this one is the hardest part of a morning routine for me to implement! For some reason, I just can't seem to get myself to break out my journal and pen and spend a few minutes getting thoughts out of my head.

But most morning routines from the 30Days plan, Miracle Morning, and so on, include spending time writing or journaling each morning.

By the time you've done meditation, affirmations, and visualization, your mind should be clear and focused, and you'll probably have new creative ideas, clarity about what you really want, new dreams for the future, etc. Take a few minutes and write those precious thoughts down!

You can type in an app like Evernote, but most successful entrepreneurs recommend handwritten journal entries. Again, coming back to the power of your thoughts, combining the physical action of writing with the thoughts reinforces them in your mind and makes them even more powerful.

7. Goal-Setting

Now that you have clarity and vision, set the structure and focus for your day! Set your Top 3 goals for what you want to accomplish with the rest of the day, and then make every effort to stick to just those 3 goals.

You know that you'll be tempted with numerous distractions as the day progresses, so having that clear and simple to-do list will help make sure that you stay focused and accomplish the most important action items for the day.

8. Healthy Breakfast

Lastly, before you jump into the rest of your day, the final element of a strong morning routine is to fuel your body with a nutritious breakfast.

Just like exercise, I'm positive you know the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast. So finish off your morning with something tasty and nutritious to give your body the fuel it needs to achieve great things for the rest of the day.

What's The Formula For Your Perfect Morning Routine?

I love learning what successful people do to develop their personal mindset and focus every day, and I think creating a morning routine is something simple that everyone can emulate in their own lives. It doesn't require any special skills or resources, and no matter how busy you are, you can make time to incorporate some or all of these elements into your day.

You can even make a nighttime routine if you have to!

The important thing is to re-shape your thinking patterns, keep your body healthy and energized, and work to release stress and maintain mindfulness.
